Excise policy withdrawn in Delhi has done a great job in Punjab: Kejriwal

New Delhi:

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that the excise policy 2021-22 was not allowed to be implemented by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi. The same policy has proved effective in Punjab. There is also a government of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab. The Delhi government was forced to withdraw the policy in July after Lieutenant Governor (LG) VK Saxena recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into alleged irregularities in the implementation of the policy.

The Kejriwal-led Delhi government did not give any immediate reason for withdrawing the policy. AAP chief and Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal tweeted, “This same excise policy was not implemented in Delhi to us and it has proved to be effective in Punjab. Congratulations to Bhagwant Mann and Harpal.”

Punjab Excise Minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Thursday said the state’s excise collection has crossed Rs 4,000 crore for the first time in the first six months of the financial year.

In a cabinet note by the Delhi government, the reasons for withdrawing the policy were attributed to reduction in revenue despite higher sales of liquor, loss of licensees from business, ‘unhealthy market trends’ due to exemptions and lack of premium brands. This policy was implemented on 17 November 2021.

CBI has named Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in the FIR registered for alleged irregularities in the policy.
